Low angle sun exposure, particularly around sunrise, offers specific benefits due to its natural red and near-infrared light content.
At this time, the sun’s rays travel through more of the Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out most of the higher-energy UV and blue light. The benefits include:
- Gentle on the Skin and Eyes – Early morning light has very low UV levels, reducing the risk of sunburn or photodamage while still providing beneficial wavelengths.
- Enhanced Circadian Alignment – Red and near-infrared light in the morning helps signal the body’s internal clock, supporting healthy wakefulness and sleep cycles.
- Mitochondrial Stimulation – These longer wavelengths penetrate deeper into tissues, potentially supporting cellular energy production and recovery.
- Mood and Hormonal Support – Early exposure to this spectrum can boost serotonin and prepare the body for healthy melatonin production later in the day.
In contrast, higher UV index light later in the day is better for vitamin D synthesis, but lacks the same gentle, restorative effect as sunrise red light.
