Can walking barefoot on the earth’s natural surface actually benefit you?
For most of my life, I would have dismissed this.
But when I went down the holistic health rabbit hole in 2022-2023, grounding kept resurfacing (no pun intended).
As it turns out, there is some science backing grounding and it has to do with the fact that we are electrical beings.
When our skin makes contact with natural conductive surfaces, interesting things happen inside our body.
Here are some health benefits of grounding and how they work at a cellular level.
- Lower inflammation: Grounding allows free electrons from the Earth to flow into the body through the skin. These electrons act as antioxidants, neutralizing positively charged free radicals. Reducing oxidative stress lowers inflammation in tissues.
- Improved sleep: Electrical conduction through grounding helps stabilize the body’s circadian rhythms by balancing the autonomic nervous system. At the cellular level, this may improve melatonin production, which enhances sleep quality and duration.
- Enhanced cardiovascular function: Contact with the Earth’s surface can help thin the blood by reducing red blood cell clumping. This supports better membrane potential and blood flow, lowering stress on the heart.
- Healing and tissue repair: Cells communicate and repair more effectively when oxidative stress is minimized. Electron transfer from grounding restores proper cellular signaling and mitochondrial function, supporting tissue regeneration.
The best part is grounding is one of the easiest habits to incorporate into my routine. I just take my daily morning walk fully barefoot and wear Earthing sandals when I’m walking outside the rest of the day.
Once you get over the occasional weird looks from people seeing you walking around barefoot every day, it’s no big deal.
But here’s my honest take.
I can’t say I fully understand all the science. And I honestly don’t notice any difference in how I feel on most days when I’m grounding.
It’s just one of these things I do because there’s no downside.
Worst case, it does nothing for me. Best case, it improves my sleep, inflammation, and heart health without requiring any real willpower. That perspective is what makes it a no-brainer.
